The 30-Second Test for Your Site

You don't need to be a web designer to know if your website is working. This simple test takes 30 seconds and tells you almost everything you need to know.

The test

Open your website on your phone. Not your laptop, not your desktop — your phone. Now answer these five questions honestly:

1. Does it load in under 3 seconds?

Count "one-Mississippi, two-Mississippi, three-Mississippi" from when you tap the link. If the page isn't fully loaded by three, you have a speed problem. Over half your visitors are leaving before they see anything.

2. Can you read everything without zooming?

If you have to pinch-to-zoom or turn your phone sideways to read text, your site isn't mobile responsive. In 2026, this is the bare minimum. If your site fails this test, it's costing you customers every single day.

3. Is it obvious what you do?

Without scrolling, can a stranger tell what your business does and where you're based? If your homepage opens with a giant slider, a vague tagline, or a wall of text — the answer is probably no. Visitors should understand your business in seconds.

4. Is there a clear next step?

Can you see a button, phone number, or booking link without scrolling? If a visitor has to hunt for how to contact you or take the next step, most of them simply won't bother. Make it obvious and easy.

5. Would you trust this site if it wasn't yours?

This is the hardest question. Put yourself in a customer's shoes. If you stumbled across this site while searching for a service, would you trust it? Would you feel confident handing over your money or personal details?

Be brutally honest. If the answer is "not really", your customers feel the same way.

How did you score?

5 out of 5: Your site is in good shape. Keep it updated and you're ahead of most local businesses.

3-4 out of 5: There's room to improve. A few targeted changes could make a real difference to how customers perceive you.

0-2 out of 5: Your website is actively hurting your business. The good news? It's fixable — and it doesn't have to cost a fortune.
